Committees - Quality of
Compressed Air
The development of air treatment has
been in direct response to customer needs. The PNEUROP Air Treatment
sector has since its inception in 1959 provided not only the compressed
air industry but also the user with standardised air quality
classifications. In addition it has produced many of the measurement
specifications which have gone on to become the ISO standards in the ISO
8573 series.
The simple aim in the beginning was
to "Identify a contaminant classification system for compressed
air". Having achieved that and then various measurement methods the
task is now to ensure that all of this work is brought to the attention
of the user, so the extended goal is;

devise, develop and promote
air treatment technology and standards
in the compressed air field
Standards

The PNEUROP Air Treatment sector was
instrumental in the formation of sub-committee, SC4, in the
International Standards committee ISO TC118 "Compressor, Pneumatic
tools, machines and associated equipment" to progress many of its
work items into ISO standards.
When the call came to industry in
the late 1980's to formulate standards for use in compliance with
European Legislation the PNEUROP Air Treatment sector responded with
participation in the work of CEN TC54 in pressure vessel and related
technology standards.
Legislation
The air treatment sector has
participated by providing participants in the formulation of European
legislation for industry. The Simple Pressure Vessels Directive and the
Pressure Equipment Directive being of prime interest.
Future
The PNEUROP Air Treatment activities
having been influenced mainly by the needs of customers and their ever
more demanding air purity requirements has responded with defining
measurement methods for contaminants in compressed air.
The next step is clear to encourage
the user to provide experiences of the use of those standards. Feedback
through this website on the standards will provide the all important
guide in its future work in the revision phases of those standards.
The introduction of filter
performance standards in ISO TC118 brings a change in emphasise for the
PNEUROP Air Treatment sector. There will be a need to evaluate how these
standards will affect the technical specification of those filter
mechanisms addressed in the ISO 12500 series.
Many users are unaware of the
improvements in equipment and the standards on air treatment and as such
it is an important issue to communicate the development of both aspects
to the user.
